Lyrics:
And everything revolves around the chips
You throw some in, you throw some out
I guess I should have never bet on this
You throw your cards, I'm down and out

And you can go and find your, you can go and find yourself
So long
I won't try and stop you, I won't try and stop you now
Godspeed
I won't try and stop you, I won't try and stop you now
Godspeed

And you told me, well you told me
Everything I didn't want to hear
And now I'm swearing, yeah I'm swearing
I'm swearing like I fell right off the ship

And I know, in time this to will pass
And yeah I know, in time this too will pass

And everything will crumble to the sea
The tide will rise and fall
How similar it is to you and me
The crashing waves and all

And you can go and find your, you can go and find yourself
So long
I won't try and stop you, I won't try and stop you now
Godspeed
I won't try and stop you, I won't try and stop you now
Godspeed

And you told me, well you told me
Everything I didn't want to hear
And now I'm swearing, yeah I'm swearing
I'm swearing like I fell right off the ship

And I know, in time this to will pass
And yeah I know, in time this too will pass
But I can't stop living the past
No I can't stop living the past

Quicksand

It can feel uneasy not knowing what direction you are headed. We twist and turn through decisions in life, always wondering if we made the right choice. We ask ourselves,

“What if I would have chosen differently? Am I where I am supposed to be?”

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just ask those questions and get an answer, or to know where to go before you even get there? It’s not always laid out like that, and we don’t always have a prophet guiding us towards our purpose. In fact, sometimes it can feel like an endless sinking, like time just keeps getting deeper and deeper and all we do is struggle blindly. In the end, the important part is to always push forward and find a way out no matter how much we sink down. Through steady effort, we will find steady ground.

Quicksand

Well I’ve been waiting
On some big picture
This life I’m framing
Well, its moving quicker
What will be will be
Or so they tell me
Is that my fate here?
Or could I change things?

Brother John
I’ve got some questions
Tell me
What am I to become?
I need direction
Show me
I’ve just been on the run

This road I’m walking
It’s always the same thing
And the path less taken
I walk through blindly
Your heart will guide you
Or so they all say
If it gets broken
Do we lose our way

Brother John
I want some answers
Tell me
How can I save myself?
Inside this desert
Show me
Where does the river dwell?

And I need a clean slate
I need a clean slate

Quicksand is where I bathe
These days, oh these days

Becoming The Dire Wolf

Many times in life we find ourselves running from something. We run from those who have wronged us, from tragedy, from responsibility, or simply the past. Sometimes though, we are chased by something unknown. We run and run, always trying to stay ahead of it, but it keeps nipping at our heels. Not all that follows us can be outrun. Sometimes we have to turn and face that thing to find peace and grow stronger.

Sometimes we realize that we were running from ourselves all along.

Lyrics

Waiting for the wolves
To make a meal out of me
You know I've seen stranger things
Happen round here
But nothings more unusual
Than seeing yourself
Become the very thing
That rang the dinner bell

Looks like the feast is upon me
Or so it always was
I guess I should be grateful
For it takes a hunger
To see what you're really worth

Now I'm skin and bones
Took every piece of me
Strange how the weight is gone
All that's left is me
Stripped down to the very soul
I gave myself for free
I've become the very thing
That's been chasing me

Looks like the beast is upon me
Or so it always was
I guess I should be grateful
For in the den of wolves
You see what you're really worth

Vacation to Arcadia

This song is the result of a spontaneous improv session with Josh Godfrey (My Hero Is Me/New Age Of Radio/Bare The Traveler), Matt Johnson (For The Fix/Other Side Of Fear/Team Edgar/Stave), and Shane Young (Goodnight Ghost/Stave/Catchlight/Strange Intuition/Solo). After meeting each other through the local music circuit, Josh, Matt, and Shane maintain a friendship that includes the occasional jam session. “Vacation to Arcadia” was very impromptu and immediately the trio knew it was worth capturing. It was written and recorded on-site at Shane Young’s home studio, then mixed and mastered By Evan Hinshaw and Shane Young at Catchlight Studios.

“Music is like a conversation. Every time you add someone to it, the conversation changes.” – Matt Johnson

This is our conversation.

Lifting Spirits

A flower that grows crooked is still beautiful. A tree scarred by lightning shows character. A crack in the earth may become a lake filled with life. Imperfections do not make a thing unworthy and there is a great beauty found in hardship. We can’t always be dealt the best hand, but we must laugh when we are losing. We must love when we are down. We must sing straight through the storm. Only then will our weaknesses become our strengths. Only then will we know the truest form of peace.

Pull me under
How many atoms does it take
To keep me on the surface
Looking out for something I don’t know
Well this world
Is a stone

I swim for the lighthouse
Hoping for some light to shine on me
But no one left the light on
So here I am singing through the sea
Singing through the sea

Low and behold
I’ve been asking questions
With answers only I could ever know
Held below the surface
By something that I cannot let go
Well the truth
Is a stone

So I swim for the light house
Hoping for some light to shine on me
But no one left the light on
So here I am singing through the sea
Headed for the shipwreck
Never caring once for my fate
Surrender to the current
Singing Hallelujah all the way
Im on my way

Forst For The Trees

As we journey through life, we must all face adversity. Each of our paths are unique and filled with twists and turns that make it easy to forget the way. Sometimes we are blinded by our own doubt and lose sight of who we really are. The hardest part is not always being lost, but to move forward and surrender to what we cannot control. As long as we stay true to who we really are, we will always remember how to fly and see the world from a better point of view.

The Project

The Project is a new song from Evan Hinshaw’s solo musical experiment Sly Like Fox.

It is the first song in the Sly Like Fox project to feature Evan’s home-made dulcimer at which he calls the Flintwood CSD.

Flintwood CSD

Evan originally designed the dulcimer to work as a fun lead instrument in Catchlight. You can find hand-held strum dulcimers for sale but they are mostly built with a diatonic fret layout which makes it easy to play scales in a song but forces you to tune the instrument to whatever key the song is in.

Diatonic Scale Merlin Dulcimer by Seagull
Diatonic Scale vs Chromatic Scale

The Flintwood C.S.D. (Chromatic Strum Dulcimer) has a complete chromatic fret layout which allows the instrument to stay in a form of standard tuning. It feels a little like playing the bass guitar but has a sound that is much like a mandolin.

Evan has developed a few prototypes in which he has future plans for building and selling CSDs and other small specialized folk instruments under the product name of Flintwood.

“When I play the CSD in Catchlight, I usually play it with a familiar folk mandolin strum style, but with this Sly Like Fox song, I wanted to think outside of the box and play the CSD in a progressive pick style to showcase the instrument in a different way.” -Evan Hinshaw

Evan calls this song, “The Project” because it reminds him of a parent and child working on a project together. He said he visualizes something like a woodworking project or some sort of craft project. The string section is the parent that has slower and patient guidance to it. The dulcimer is the child with a playful, bouncier tone to it. There are moments when the dulcimer pauses and the strings continue on as if the child is waiting for instruction from the parent.

Fly

“Fly” is the latest track written and recorded by Strange Intuition, and then mixed and mastered at Catchlight’s studio.

“Just like most of our songs, Fly was written in the wee hours of the morning after yet another restless night of good company and guitars. Outside with the rising sun, a lively tune presented itself and we chose to pursue it. The lyrics were very impromptu and we just sang about the moment we were in. We watched a plane fly over us and pondered the fact that the passengers may be just starting their day while we were ending ours. They had no idea we were down there writing a song about them, and we had no idea where they were going. It all seemed quite serendipitous. In the end, we just had fun with it and romanticized the idea of flying away with nothing but a dream.”

Never Can Tell

5113+10%linesFinal

This song was a long process for me in terms of lyricism. The guitar came to me quickly and I knew that the lyrics needed to really reach out at something. I had several moments during the sculpting of this song where I really just let go and let the music create the story and guide my words. I kept coming back to the phrase “Never can tell” which was fitting because that was truly the feeling behind this song. At any given moment while working on it I could be happy, frustrated, or thinking of what I was doing in life, and ultimately just not knowing. When all of these things started to combine I realized how important it was to let go, and not always “have the answer”.

It gets tiring to see everything put in a box like it always has to be a certain way when we know in our hearts it can change in an instant. The biggest forces in this world are just too far out of reach to put a finger on. There is peace within the journey and the search, and sometimes we learn more from that than just a simple answer.
